The leaf fell slowly on the breeze. It was just floating through the air, dropping down in backward andforward motions. And then there was a flash of blue, enveloping the leaf and leaving it as a cinder.
The men in the white coats watched as the patient used the new robotic arm to shoot the targets ahead, beneath the shelter of the apple tree. The tree was injured on the trunk from a few stray blasts but the patient was doing well. Their aim improved as soon as they got used to the arm. The air was cool and the metal of the arm cold.
The year was 1967 and the robotic arm was an early development of something that would one day change the world. As the research project went on, other body parts were tested out. The arms, the legs, the eyes, the ears, the body itself.
It's been forty-five years since the arm was tested in the gardens of the research facility at Summersglade Estate.
A car pulled up on the drive way at 1100 hours. Rebecca Bright got out of the car, looking up at the old Georgian era estate. It had been renovated quite a lot. It seemed more... Victorian these days but that's what happens when an estate falls into disrepair for half a centuary before some Victorian man hired by the Queen herself is drafted in to redesign and renovate the entire manor house. The gardens were lovely, though. Acres of green. The trees were so mixed and mingled that it could have been a tree of the world convention!
Rebecca closed the car door behind her and looked at the house again. The flower beds were slightly disorganized. This surprised her, given the knowledge she had of the place. Someone led her into the house. Behind them, Rebecca surveyed her clothes. Her plaid skirt that was blue and grey checked, white blouse and navy blue tie. Her shoes were sensible with the bright white knee-high socks she wore. No doubt to anyone who looked at her, she was a girl who had just arrived from boarding school. She didn't live here. Rebecca was always brought here. Her mother was dead and her father had never been in the picture. He didn't even know of Rebecca's existance. But Rebecca knew of his existance and everytime she was at Summersglade, she knew every move he made. He was around her quite often, not even knowing who Rebecca Bright was.
At 1600 hours, Rebecca ate dinner. Dinner was fine cooked, although the chicken breast was a little dry for Rebecca's tastes. The potatoes had low fat butter melted on them and mixed herbs on top. The vegetables were nicely cooked.
At 2100 hours, Rebecca went to bed for the night.
And finally, at 0300 hours, Rebecca was kidnapped.
